One of the places we've enjoyed visiting a few times was Beecher's. On our first visit, I picked up some of their Flagship cheese and enjoyed a cup of French Onion soup while kiddo munched on a Grilled Cheese. Kiddo really enjoyed it, not because of his lunch, but because he could eat it while sitting up against the glass, watching them make the cheese on site. In fact, while out wandering the next day, he insisted we go back again for lunch. This time I had a Crab Grilled cheese, which was really tasty. Since then, we have picked up their "to go" Macaroni & Cheese for dinner one night. It too, was a hit. Since the waist line has been expanding since I got here, we have avoided our daily trips to the market, but I recommend a visit to Beecher's if you are in Seattle. And if you are in the area, let me know so I can join you for lunch!
Heidi MacInnishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07685541568827807367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22399366.post-15226163575284217752008-04-01T16:14:00.000-07:002008-04-01T16:39:43.791-07:00Cafe NolaWhile the movers were busy packing up our belongings in Austin, I caught part of a "Giada's Weekend Getaways" episode. It featured Food Network's Giada De Laurentiis exploring Seattle, so of course I paid attention. She explored Pike Place Market, ate at Lowell's (not impressed with the service we received there), and took the ferry to Bainbridge Island and had brunch at Cafe Nola.

Since, we were 12 days later than planned closing on the house, we had another weekend to kill in the city, so decided to take the ferry to Bainbridge on Sunday for something to do and decided we would check out Cafe Nola for ourselves.

Our first mistake was an error in programming our navigation system in the car when we got off the ferry. We headed off on our search for a late brunch, and once well off Bainbridge realized we were no where near our destination. With a quick reprogramming of the Cafe Nola address, we were turned around on our way back to the street next to the ferry terminal! Oh well, we had a lovely drive (despite a small snow/freezing rain storm) and found Cafe Nola with no problems.

It was much smaller and much less scenic than I was expecting. None the less, it was quaint and tastefully decorated and most importantly, we still had 1/2 hour left to order brunch. Despite the horrid service (not rude, just slow and inattentive), the food was really good. Hubby had fish and chips and kiddo and I shared the french toast. It came recommended by Giada and it was wonderful.

It was made from challah bread, covered in caramel and pecans and served with maple syrup and fresh fruit. Decadent!

Although there are many other items on the menu I would love to try including the Roasted Beet Salad and Crab Melt, I won't be rushing back there anytime soon. I think it would be worth giving them another shot at the service, but wouldn't bring kiddo with me.

P.S. As I was checking out Cafe Nola's website to link in my blog, I found this link to the recipe for their french toast. A long while. I'm now in a new state, waiting to get in the new house, and looking for a new job. Hubby took a job with Amazon.com and we moved to Seattle 3-1/2 weeks ago. I have been living in a corporate apartment on the 19th floor of a high rise downtown since then. Let me tell you, as great as it is to be in walking distance of some great restaurants, great shopping, including the infamous Pike Place Market, urban living isn't all it is cracked up to be. Having to share such space with a stir crazy five year old and taking to large dogs down 24 levels to get to the waterfront to go do their business has definitely become old!

However, there is an end in site (we closed on the new house this morning) and we are trying to make the most of our time here.

We have visited the Seattle aquarium, the Space Needle, made a trip to Target, Crate & Barrel, and Pottery Barn(not as convenient as it was in Texas, which is probably good for the pocket book), enjoyed a homemade Easter dinner (and my 35th birthday, blah!), and most recently took the ferry to Bainbridge Island for a tour and brunch (see my next post for the details).

So, before I get entrenched in unpacking and setting up the new place and interviewing for new jobs, I will try to get a few foodie blogs in about my culinary finds so far!

And I'll try to be more consistent about updating my blog too! ;)
Heidi MacInnishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07685541568827807367noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22399366.post-9088158419127778632007-10-03T21:07:00.000-07:002007-10-03T21:13:55.580-07:00The New GigI know it's been awhile, but I thought I'd let you all know what I'm doing now. I'm working at Lifetime Fitness (my gym) in the Cafe as a Prep Chef/Supervisor. I have a reasonably regular schedule now. Besides making smoothies, sandwiches, and salads, I'm making chicken, aiolis, salsa, hummus, sauces, dressings, etc. Nothing too exciting, but it's going pretty well.

I may have a couple of catering opportunities coming up as well. Nothing concrete, but we'll see what happens.

I'll check in again soon!Heidi MacInnishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07685541568827807367noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22399366.post-60949462217410516662007-08-07T19:40:00.000-07:002007-08-07T19:56:37.967-07:00A New Addiction I seem to be the type prone to addictions; bags, sneakers, chocolate, magazines, etc... Well, besides needing some serious therapy (and not the retail version), I have a new addiction. I'm addicted to Mrs. Meyers.

Mrs. Meyer's is a line of cleaning products. I have seen it many times on my shopping trips to my local World Market stores, but now it is at my local grocery store. They had it featured a couple of weeks ago (end of the aisle shelves), so I picked up some All Purpose Cleaner, Surface Scrub, and Counter Top Spray all in the Lemon Verbena fragrance. I love it! They are very mild, so I haven't used them to clean the shower yet (for some reason I think I need a lot of heavy chemicals to clean the shower right), but wonderful for everyday.

I'm sure my best friend Ang would love the counter spray (we are kind of weird when it comes to our counters).

I haven't ventured into the other flavors, like Geranium and Lavender, since I'm a citrus flavor kind of gal. But I did pick up another product today; Lemon Verbena hand soap pump for the 1/2 bath.

I may have issues, but at least my house will smell great!Heidi MacInnishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07685541568827807367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22399366.post-34086665891553689202007-06-22T20:17:00.000-07:002007-06-22T20:36:10.571-07:00Update on the New Job, and my aching feet...Well I just completed week 2 of the new job. The first week didn't really count. I only spent 2-1/2 days in the kitchen last week. The rest was spent on training on the front of the house (customer service/hosting/computer system stuff).

However, I spent the entire 5 days this week in the kitchen. Monday, I worked with Lysa and then Tuesday thru today I was on my own with my own entrees to do. I started out pretty slow, but took about an hour off my time between Tuesday and Wednesday (with more work thrown in). And today, I got out of there at a reasonable time even though I seemed to have a slow start. I really like being in the kitchen. I like the food prep stuff. I have to admit that I'm not loving (or even liking) the "packaging" side of it.

Here's a quick summary of what I worked on Tuesday-Friday:

* Cut and butterflied 504 steaks
* Hard boiled, peeled, and chopped 192 eggs
* Prepared and packaged 516 chicken breasts
* Marinated and packaged 84 pork tenderloin
* Packaged 252 fish fillets
* Misc. other activities - white sauces, marinades, salsas, etc.

But here's the part that gets me... opened, filled, and closed approximately 1290 Ziploc bags. That doesn't even touch the foil pans and lids, glad containers, marinade cups, etc. It would be pretty easy work except for the Ziploc bags!!!

Plus, after 10 years of a desk job, my feet and back are having to adjust to my new routine. We don't typically take more than a 20 min. break a day, and I have been working anywhere from 8 to 11 hours a day. Hopefully my feet will be ready to return on Monday morning!Heidi MacInnishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07685541568827807367noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22399366.post-91526241067154714632007-06-10T19:49:00.000-07:002007-06-10T19:56:23.279-07:00Tomorrow It Begins...Well, this is it. Friday was my last day as an Engineer. Well as a working Engineer anyway. So tomorrow I begin all over again. As a rookie in the food biz. I'll let you know how it goes! Wish me luck. I worked Friday night for a Private dinner party featuring Russian Food. The class was presented by the ever popular CM House Chef Vance. And although we couldn't drink Vodka, a think a good time was had by all (including the class crasher). CM Chef Paul and one other volunteer also worked. We tried this recipe (used NY Strip steak vs. Flank) and both loved it! It was out of my May issue of Cooking Light Magazine. Give it a try!

Grilled Flank Steak with Tomato, Avocado, and Cucumber Salad

Steak:
1 (2 1/4-pound) flank steak, trimmed
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
Cooking spray

Salad:
1 cucumber (about 3/4 pound), peeled, halved lengthwise, seeded, and cut into 1/4-inch-thick slices
2 cups grape tomatoes
2 cups torn Bibb lettuce
1 1/2 cups (1/2-inch) diced peeled avocado
1/3 cup vertically sliced red onion
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1 1/2 teaspoons minced seeded serrano chile
1 1/2 teaspoons extravirgin olive oil
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

To prepare steak, place steak in a large shallow dish. Drizzle with 2 tablespoons juice, and sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon pepper; rub into steak. Cover; let steak stand at room temperature for 20 minutes, turning occasionally.

Prepare grill.

Remove steak from dish; discard marinade. Sprinkle steak with 1/4 teaspoon salt. Place steak on a grill rack coated with cooking spray; grill 8 minutes on each side or until desired degree of doneness. Let stand 10 minutes before thinly slicing.

To prepare salad, combine cucumber, tomatoes, lettuce, avocado, and onion in a large bowl. Combine cilantro and the remaining ingredients. Drizzle cilantro mixture over cucumber mixture; toss gently. Serve with steak.

Yield: 8 servings (serving size: 3 ounces steak and 3/4 cup salad)

Laura Zapalowski
Cooking Light, MAY 2007Heidi MacInnishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07685541568827807367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22399366.post-22012066784919626412007-05-09T19:13:00.000-07:002007-05-09T19:18:04.686-07:00Lots to Report!Well, not really "lots". But there is some news on the cranberryRelish front. I got approval last week on my employment permit, so while it will be some months before I see a green card, I should be able to switch careers in a matter of days when I get my card in the mail! So the decisions (and job search) begin! Exciting and nerve racking at the same time. Just when I am having my 10 year anniversary from graduating from university with an Engineering degree, I am contemplating changing fields (and hopefully gaining much joy and sanity) at the same time!

Also, I'm working at CM on Sunday night (private class, Russian food), so I will update you after that!

Wish me luck!Heidi MacInnishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07685541568827807367noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22399366.post-42309983758257222812007-04-17T20:04:00.000-07:002007-04-17T20:14:18.964-07:00Nothing new to reportWell I'm behind in my postings regarding the cooking classes I worked at CM last month. I haven't done any classes lately, since the hotel has been open for business for over a month (we only see family in the Spring).

Hubby took me out to eat for my birthday. We tried III Forks downtown. Nothing to brag about. Great steaks, which you would expect for a steakhouse. Good atmosphere. But nothing else spectacular. We had a nice time though. It was nice to have an adult dinner and adult conversation for the first time in awhile!

Anyway, on another note, I got fingerprinted on Friday by Immigration. One step closer to a change in careers!Heidi MacInnishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07685541568827807367noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22399366.post-25777632107856796332007-03-12T05:43:00.000-07:002007-03-12T05:58:16.142-07:00Holy Crap! The Austin American Statesman is reporting today of David Bull's resignation from the Driskill Hotel. I am so sad! I am happy for Chef in that it seems he will be putting his culinary creativity to good use , but he will be done at the Driskill two days prior to my birthday! Guess I'll have to celebrate early. Sad day for this Austin foodie!Heidi MacInnishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07685541568827807367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22399366.post-9348179397521851932007-03-08T07:06:00.000-08:002007-03-09T12:37:55.570-08:00Memory of a Foodie...On Monday, I was talking to a friend of mine and fellow foodie on messenger. He was giving me some flack about not updating my blog lately. Today, I am remembering that friend...

Wednesday, our dear friend Greg passed away at 34. He was rushed to the hospital not feeling well on Tuesday night, had an aneurysm, and passed Wednesday afternoon. He leaves behind a wonderful wife and friends and family who thought the world of him.

Greg and I shared a food connection. We talked food when we saw each other. With a dream of maybe some day working together on something culinary.

I cannot even begin to imagine, what Audrey (his wife) is going through. Unfortunately, I cannot be there for the services this weekend (hubby has made the trip), but I hope that she (and Greg) know that I am there in spirit...

http://www.halifaxherald.com/announcements/display.php?anntype=obituaries~2007/03/09~15997656Heidi MacInnishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07685541568827807367noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22399366.post-52458139474973859632007-02-02T18:41:00.000-08:002007-02-02T19:03:20.747-08:00I was tagged!I was "tagged" by Carly tonight, so here are 5 weird things about me (that I will admit to):

1.) I hate everyone when I'm behind the wheel, but I can be very nice when I step out of the car.
2.) My close friends called me "Hodel" growing up and my sister called me "Lizard-Breath" (my middle name is Elizabeth).

3.) I'm convinced I sleep better when my house is in order.

4.) I'm like Monica from Friends (I like clean, but my closets are a mess, and I'm a wanna be Chef).
5.) My answer to not knowing what to have to eat is "toast"!

Hubby wouldn't help me with this, since he figured I would hold him against him. I'm sure others would say a lot "weirder" stuff.

Now, I'm tagging Sara because I know she'll be much better at this than I...Heidi MacInnishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07685541568827807367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22399366.post-27646472466237921502007-01-30T06:43:00.000-08:002007-01-30T06:53:24.856-08:00Fortune Cookie

We went to Pei Wei to grab a bite on Sunday evening. I did work at Central Market last Thursday and the food was delicious! I didn't go too crazy (if you are following my other blog, W.B.S.G). Of course, one would expect no less from Chef David Bull!

Here's what we served: White Asparagus and Arugula Salad; Pistachio-Crusted Sea Scallops with Chanterelle Mushrooms and Truffled Herb Salad; Garlic-Crusted Rack of Lamb with Camembert Risotto, Oregano Herb Broth & Garlic Chips (divine); and Assorted Chocolate Truffles (from the Bakery).

The food was amazing and David was great as always. Also, his Bakery Sous-Chef Monica was there again and she is a delight!

I work with them again in February. I managed to get through it on my own (with a little help from hubby).

Here is the menu I came up with based on the budget allocated:

Spiced Nuts; Olive Medley; Green Goddess Dip with assorted crudites; Assorted Cheese Tray with Globe Grapes; Meatball Lollipops with Apricot Sweet & Sour Sauce; Spanish Spinach and Tomato pizzas; Three Cheese Phyllo Triangles; Homemade Chocolate Truffles; Sweets Tray (Snow Flecked Brownies; Chocolate Chip Cookies; Shortbread Cookies; garnished with Strawberries); Dark Chocolate and Peppermint Whipped Cream Tart.

Work was crazy busy last week so I didn't get to make too much in advance. I made the truffles (a multi-day project) last week and the brownies last weekend. I ended up making 175 meatballs, the green goddess dip, the spiced nuts, chocolate chip cookies, and shortbread cookies on Friday night. Saturday, I made 150 phyllo triangles, 50 pizzas, 4 tarts, cut up the veggies, ironed 60 napkins, washed 50 wine glasses, etc. I had it ready in time, but it was pushing it. I definitely could have used some hired help.

They and their guests seemed to be pleased with the results, so hopefully this will lead to more for Cranberry Relish! Now today I found out we are having a holiday luncheon at work on Thursday, so back to baking tomorrow night... ;)
Heidi MacInnishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07685541568827807367noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22399366.post-76438609026425263532006-12-01T15:48:00.000-08:002006-12-01T16:32:30.138-08:00Friday LuncheonI had the great pleasure of accompanying a co-worker (and friend), his lovely wife, and their charming friends to lunch today. We ate at Houston's restaurant. I think I have only been to Houston's twice (including today), but have remarked on both occasions how incredibly wonderful the service has been. Not only is the serving staff gracious and attentive; but knowledgeable (including of the artwork hanging in the restaurant). We all chose from the lunch salad menu (all had different dishes). I had the Thai Beef Noodle salad. It was so refreshing, delicious, and beautifully plated. The ingredients were fresh and the beef was cooked perfectly. I highly recommend it for a special occasion or a power lunch.Heidi MacInnishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07685541568827807367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22399366.post-1164254153266656972006-11-22T19:53:00.000-08:002006-11-22T19:55:53.280-08:00Holiday TreatsWell the wonderful Domestic Goddess has me on the holiday baking kick tonight. I am not much of a baker, but we will be enjoying US Thanksgiving with our friends in San Antonio tomorrow and felt that I should bring a few goodies along. After all, she will be making the turkey and all the fixin's along with about five different pies and cheesecake. I put together a hostess basket that turned out quite nicely. To give it a personal touch, I made two recipes blogged by the Goddess herself, and had pretty good results. First I made the Chocolate Chip and Almond Biscotti and packaged it in a glass and brushed silver canister, which I hope will be enjoyed by my coffee drinkin' hostess. Also, I tried her decadent (but untraditional) Snow-Flecked Brownies which are dark chocolate with white chocolate morsels. I packaged the brownies in Chinese take out containers adorned with Christmas trees that I picked up at the Container Store this week.

Happy Thanksgiving Y'all!Heidi MacInnishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07685541568827807367noreply@blogger.com1
